Just Beacuse She is a Girl?

5-year-old girl raped, dumped and left bleeding on roadside in Bengaluru

Tamil Nadu: Two drivers, conductor gang-rape 15-year-old girl in bus; 4 held

Three-year-old girl raped by neighbor in Delhi

Man gets life term for raping three-month-old baby in Hyderabad

Servant held guilty of killing, raping 81-year-old widow

And many such cases are reported everyday. According to the statistics, 140 cases of rape and 238 cases of molestation registered were registered by Delhi Police in January alone out of which 43 and 133 cases respectively remain unsolved.

These numbers would be shocking for any country in the world but not India anymore. India, where women are harassed, where men have forgotten their responsibilities, and have turned into animals, no longer is a safe place for women. Delhi, the capital of India, now, popularly known as the rape capital of India doesn’t seem to have any ending to this. Men are becoming monsters here and the dignity of a woman is in danger.

The latest one coming from Uttar Pradesh of a 37 year old woman coming back from a relative’s place was gang raped by 2 men and on going to the police station and asking for the justice, the inspector asked her to do a ‘sexual favor’ before registering an FIR.

Is this the police we reply upon for our security? Is this the police we look upto asking for justice? Is this the new way to seek justice for a girl even when there was no fault of hers?

India- Where laws are made, but not implemented. Where Girls are taught to be careful of unknown men but are unsafe in their own homes, where a newly wed woman is molested by her in laws for dowry, where a woman is raped by her own husband and the laws of the country says marital rape is not a crime, where if a girl is molested, the society questions her on ‘encouraging’ the males and boys are defended saying ‘mistakes happen’.

Mistakes? Are we even making sense by this? A 17 year boy rapes a woman and he gets away with the law by stating that he’s not an adult.  If he is old enough to rape a woman he must be punished like a grown up man. His thinking tells how old he is mentally to be punished.

People in India have forgotten who a woman is. She is the one who gives them birth. She is the one who ties a rakhi to her brother expecting him to protect her. She is the one who keeps the family connected. The one who sacrifices her home after marriage and goes to an entirely different family.

And what does she get in return? Being sexually harassed by her own husband, by her own brother. Being tortured for her right?

Do women deserve to be in a society like this? Where there’s no respect given to them? Where there’s no one to give them justice?

Today Noida, Gurgaon, Uttar Pradesh, all these have earned a major spot in the daily news. Not because they have been undergoing development, but because of the outgrowing cases of misbehavior with women. It’s often said girls should not be stopped in going out anywhere, but after all what’s happening in the country, as a parent, would you be fine with sending her out? With friends to a party, or just at a shop in locality or to a neighbor’s house?

According to the constitution, the rapists should be hanged to death but look at this way. A girl is raped, she dies and the entire family suffers, why? They lost their girl because her only fault was that she was a girl. And even if the girl stays alive, the society, with all the talks about her, kills her mentally. Everyone sees her differently. Such an incident destroys her life. Yes, It happens in India.

Why are the boys, the men not understanding their responsibility? Why aren’t they understanding that a girl in short clothes is not an opportunity to be raped? She is not giving hints. She has all the rights to wear whatever she wants.

Is it the lack of awareness or Is it the lack of education and Moral values? Where does this country lack? After the ‘Nirbhaya’ case, when the candle marches began and everyone started to ask for justice, one thought this would bring a change in the society. But what happened? Nothing changed.

Today, no one is afraid of the laws and that’s one major reason of the crimes happening. Why can’t they be made more strict? Do the rapists deserve to get away? And most of all, why are the laws not followed? Why do everyone get handicapped in front of money? People have lost their trust in the laws.

Men in this country should stand up against this and help women if anyone misbehaves with them because one day, that ‘girl’ you read about in the newspaper, can be your sister, your mother or your daughter. Maybe then the realization will come. No matter who you are, and how big family you belong to, No one, NO ONE has the right to rape a woman. Understand this and protect women, because as a country, all of us are responsible for this misbehavior against women, the one who does it and also the one who chooses not to help.

–  In hope of a future when this country is safe enough for women.

  1. These are the one’s that got the eye of society, but according to the survey hundreds of girls are raped everyday but victims prefer not to make it an issue just for the sake of society. If all the victims starts to report the incident then these incidents may be minimized but nothing can be said until men stop seeing wemen as there property.

  2. Truly said Anmol. But you know that people will remain with the same mentality , god knows till when. But yeah they should atleast teach their children to not to objectify a person(men or women). 👍
